Two cities, and the excuse between them

He lives somewhere else. You tell the story of the miles so often that the miles have become the reason the love did not hold. Sometimes that story is true. A life in two places fails for practical reasons: rent, a parent, a visa, a job that will not move. Nobody has to be the villain. Sometimes the miles are a cover. They let both of you want each other without having to survive a Wednesday. Longing is light. A shared week is heavy. Distance keeps the longing and cancels the week.

There is a phrase people use with pride and with fatigue: long-distance relationship. The phrase can name a real structure, with visits on a calendar and a plan for when the distance ends. It can also name a feeling that only works in airports. The difference is not how much you miss him. The difference is what happens when you are in the same room.

Test the last visit, not the idea of the cities

When you were in the same room, did the old ease return, or did you both become polite? Did a plan get made for the next month, or did the goodbye do all the emotional work? If the visits are the best of you and the gaps are silence, you do not have a distance problem. You have a contact problem that the distance makes respectable. Miles are a dignified excuse. If only we lived closer can be true and still be doing a second job: protecting you both from a no.

What a calendar would show

A next visit that exists on a date is different from a next visit that exists in a tone of voice. Write down the last three visits and the next one, if it has a day. If you cannot find a day, you are maintaining a feeling. Feelings can be precious. They are not a household. Blaise Pascal wrote that the heart has its reasons. He did not write that the heart has a train ticket.

A window between two kinds of light, for an essay about love in two cities.
The miles are sometimes the wall. Sometimes they are the story you both prefer.

The heart has its reasons which reason knows nothing of.

Blaise Pascal, Pensées

Use the line as a warning as well as a tribute. A heart can be loyal to a reason that would not survive a shared kitchen. Reason, here, is not the enemy of love. It is the part of you that asks who pays for the flight, who moves, and what a Tuesday looks like. A love that cannot stand those questions is asking to remain a poem.

Questions that sort the excuse from the wall

What you can love without signing

You can love someone in another city and still refuse a relationship that only works in airports. The refusal is not a failure of romance. It is a choice about where your actual days are spent. Bring the two cities, the date of the last visit, and whether a next visit exists. A reading can look at whether you are building one life or maintaining a feeling. You still get to choose which of those you want.
