The return you mean, and the return he offers
You say you want him back. The ache in that sentence is simple. The event is not. A full conversation is one return. A plan that still exists on Saturday is another. The sight of his name on your phone is a third. In the body they feel like the same relief. In a life they repair different things, and only one of them repairs what you are actually missing.
Most returns arrive smaller than the one you rehearsed in the car. He watches a story. He answers the easy line and leaves the question underneath. He says he has been thinking of you. You feel the whole man in that crumb, because the crumb is the first proof in weeks that you were not inventing him. Researchers have a name for a reward that comes rarely, and never on a schedule you can trust. They call it intermittent reinforcement. A slot machine is built on it. A person who writes only when the silence has become unbearable teaches a nervous system the same lesson: stay, check, hope, repeat. Love is not a machine. The learning still happens.
The crumb is not the comeback
A crumb is information. It is not a decision. People send small signals when they want the feeling of contact without the cost of a choice. A view, a like, a hey after midnight can all be sincere and still be cheap. If you treat the crumb as the comeback, you will spend the next month translating it, and he will not have to speak. There is an old expression for this. He is keeping you on the hook. The hook feels like hope. It works as a delay.
What you can put on paper
Before you look at the phone again, ask a plainer question. If he came back in the way you actually need, what would be true on an ordinary Wednesday? A time. A place. A sentence he has not said yet. Write that standard while you are calm. The version of you who is flooded will lower it the moment his name appears, and then call the lowering being open.
Absence diminishes small passions and increases great ones, as the wind blows out candles and fans a fire.
François de La Rochefoucauld, Maxims
People quote that line as comfort. Read it the other way as well. Absence does not only reveal a great love. It also inflates a small one, because nothing in the empty days contradicts the story. A candle and a fire look similar in a dark kitchen. You tell them apart by what they do when ordinary life blows through.
A standard you can keep
A real return has weight you can point to. He names what went quiet. He offers a next step that lives on a calendar, not only in a mood. He can hear not like this without punishing you with another silence. None of that requires a speech. It requires a man willing to be inconvenient to himself for an hour. You are allowed to want the larger return and to refuse the smaller one. Wanting him is not the same as accepting any version of contact. The proverb says actions speak louder than words because people have always tried to live on the words.
When the next message comes, do not answer from the first minute. Read it once as if a friend had forwarded it with the history cut away.
- What does it promise that you could write in a diary tomorrow?
- If the promise is only a feeling, it is a mood. A mood is not an appointment.
- If the promise is a plan, reply to the plan and leave the speech for later.
- If you cannot tell, wait until morning. Urgency is not the same thing as clarity.
If you sit with a reader
Bring the last real exchange, and the Wednesday standard you wrote down. Leave the highlight reel of the relationship at the door. A reading gets useful when the gap is on the table: what he offers, and what you asked. You can stop when that gap is clear. Clarity is not a verdict that he will arrive, and it is not a story that he is gone forever. It is the hour you stop doing his deciding for him.
