The message sitting in your notes

There is a text you have rewritten four times. It lives in your notes, not in the thread. It holds the thing you want him to know: the hurt, the hope, or the goodbye you never got to say out loud. You open it on the train. You change one adjective. You close it. The draft has become a room you visit.

Unsent messages do work. They let you feel the relief of speaking without the risk of his reply. That relief is real, and it is also why the draft can last for months. You get a taste of closure and you keep the door open. In the language of habit, the draft is a safety behavior. It lowers the anxiety for an hour. It also teaches you that the feeling can only be handled inside a paragraph he has never seen. You are biting your tongue in public and giving the whole speech to an empty chair.

Read it as if a friend wrote it

Does the draft ask a question he can answer, or does it deliver a speech he can only absorb or ignore? Speeches feel braver. They are also safer, because a speech does not require his turn. A question gives him a turn, which means you might receive a no, a crumb, or a truth you have been editing out. Decide the job before you decide to send.

Two jobs, and a third you already know

If the job is to be heard by him, the draft needs one question and a willingness to receive the answer, including silence. If the job is to be heard by you, the draft can stay where it is, and you can read it once to someone who is not him. The third job is the one you have been living: rewriting it forever. That job has no end, which is why it feels like devotion. It is a loop.

A letter that has not been sent, for an essay about the draft in your notes.
The draft can feel like contact. He has not read a word of it.

The most exhausting thing in life, I have discovered, is being insincere.

Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Gift from the Sea

Lindbergh was writing about the mask of social life. A draft can be the opposite of a mask: the place you are finally sincere. It can also be a mask you show only to yourself, a sincerity that never has to survive his face. Exhaustion comes from both. The sincere sentence that never leaves the notes still costs you, every time you polish it.

Send, keep, or delete

A session is a good room for the reading

Say the draft, or the gist of it. Then ask the practical question: send, or delete. You can want him and still stop negotiating with a note he has never seen. The dignity is not in the perfect sentence. It is in knowing who the sentence is for.
