A silence that starts on a Tuesday
Silences feel endless from the inside, which is why they are so hard to read. They become easier when you can find the first day. Not the day you noticed the quiet. The day the habit broke: the goodnight that did not come, the plan that slipped and was never replaced. A silence that starts on a Tuesday is a fact. A silence that feels like it has always been there is only a mood, and moods are easy to argue with at 1 a.m.
Something usually sits just before that day. A visit that ended twenty minutes early. A sentence about the future that he did not pick up. A fight you both called small. The quiet is often the answer to that moment, delayed by a few hours or a few days. Pauline Boss, who studies losses that have no funeral, calls the ache of a person who is gone and not gone ambiguous loss. He is alive. He may even be nearby. The relationship you were inside has stopped answering. The mind hates an ending it cannot date, so it keeps the case open.
Two kinds of quiet
People disappear for different reasons, and the reasons leave different shapes. A man who goes quiet in order to think has gone quiet before, and he has come back with a sentence. A man who goes quiet because he has decided tends to stay visible everywhere except your chat. One of those shapes is a pause. The other is a door. Fear will tell you they are the same, because fear would rather wait than risk the door.
Look at his other pauses
Do not study your fear. Study what he has already done. How did he leave hard talks with you in the past? Did he name a day he would speak, or did he let the days pile up until you were the one who repaired the gap? If every hard talk has ended with you stepping forward, this silence may be the first time you have not. That is information about a pattern. It is not a verdict on your worth.
Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves.
Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet, translated by M. D. Herter Norton
Rilke was writing to a young man who wanted answers before he could live them. A silence asks the same patience, with one difference. Loving the question does not mean sending it to him in five new forms. Another paragraph from you gives him a fresh thing to ignore. The silence you already have is the material. There is a phrase for the extra messages: you are beating a dead horse, hoping the next tap will be the one that wakes it.
What to hold while you wait
- Write the date the habit broke, and the sentence just before it.
- Name whether he has ended a pause like this before, and how long it took.
- Stop adding messages that ask him to explain the old ones.
- If your sleep is collapsing and the checking has taken the nights, that is a body asking for care, not only a love story asking for a reply.
A reading gets clearer when the question is about a turn, not about whether you are easy to love. Bring the date and the pattern. You do not need the whole thread.
The useful move
While you wait, the move that helps is small and unromantic. You let the silence stay the size it is. You do not decorate it, and you do not prosecute it. Radio silence is an expression from ships, when a signal stops on purpose. Sometimes that is exactly what happened. Sometimes the signal failed and nobody steered. You cannot know which from inside the static. You can know the day it started, and you can refuse to spend your evenings rebuilding the signal by yourself.
